UK Requirements for overseas nurses:

English Language Skills

Evidence of English language ability is a requirement to relocate to the UK.

There are two types of English Language tests available:

International English Language Test System (IELTS)

IELTS tests academic English, including the ability to write essays, follow lectures, understand academic articles etc.

The NMC will accept:

• an overall score of at least 7 or at least 6.5 in the writing section and at least 7 in the reading, listening and speaking sections.

Occupational English Test (OET)

OET tests healthcare English, including the ability to communicate effectively in medical scenarios, write a referral letter, understand a patient consultation.

The NMC will accept: 

• at least a B grade in the writing, reading, listening and speaking sections.

NMC Application

There are two parts to the NMC process. Only those who meet their requirements are allowed to practise as a nurse in the UK.

Part one: Computer Based Test - CBT 

• All applicants must complete a computer-based test of theoretical practice-based knowledge. 
• The test format will be multiple choice and can be taken in test centres around the world.

Part two:  Objective Structured Clinical Examination - OSCE

• This test will act out scenarios which nurses are likely to encounter when they assess, plan, carry out and evaluate care.
• You can take the OSCE in the UK at one of the approved university test centres
